Addressing Learning Gaps in Education By Raising Algebraic Understanding and Increasing Content Knowledge


Project Description:
Addressing Learning Gaps in Education By Raising Algebraic Understanding and Increasing Content Knowledge (Algebraic) Project, is a three year partnership between Lake Elsinore Unified School District (LEUSD), Temecula Valley Unified School District (TVUSD), and San Diego State University' (SDSU) Education and Math Departments.

Project Goals:

  1. Increase teacher content knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, and instructional strategies.
  2. Increase student understanding and achievement so that they are prepared for challenging mathematics courses.
  3. Build district capacity and sustainability by building teacher leadership.
  4. Institutionalize effective mathematics professional development practices.
  5. Build a collaborative professional community among teachers.

Project Strategies:

  1. Week Long summer institute about academic content based upon state standards and district needs, pedagogical strategies, studying teaching materials, and building active participation and collaboration.
  2. Mini-Institutes that extend throughout the year that focus on academic content and connecting the learned content to practice
  3. Follow up activities that will include coaching, collaboratively planing two study units and two research lessons each year that will be based upon the learned content, and use of video of lessons for discussion.
